It's the same engineering that helped to make TOYOTA GAZOO contending a dominant force in the World Rally Championship. Toyota GR Corolla's principal mastermind Naoyuki Sakamoto told CarExpert that before this time the brand was working on a bus for both the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.

  • “ It’s possible. We're testing an automatic transmission in the GR Yaris in the Japanese rally platoon, ” Sakamoto-san said.

  • “ We've joined the rally series with a GR Yaris with automatic transmission, and with each rally, if we find some issues, we ameliorate it. A similar kind of exertion is the central idea of the GR company – always from motorsports development. ”
  • still, it can be applied to the GR Yaris, and GR Corolla, “ If the automatic transmission is good enough for the GR models.

  • “ The automatic transmission needs to be good enough for the sports auto, not just easy driving. That's a minimal demand for the GR model. So if we can’t achieve that, perhaps we've to give up! I’m not sure! ” he laughed.

  • Sakamoto-san said the vehicle presently under development in the rally platoon is a ‘ regular ’ necklace-motor automatic with eight gears, rather than a binary-clutch bus or CVT.
  • “ In the test vehicle it's a ‘ normal ’ automatic transmission, but with changed gear rates – we modified it. We're developing it, so each time we modify a commodity to ameliorate it. Each time we may change commodity, nothing is fixed, ” he said.
  • “ We're studying what kind of gear rate is good, how numerous gear ways are good. ”
  • He further explained the GR- Four-wheel drive system in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla won't be affected by the relinquishment of an automatic transmission.
  • “ principally it shouldn't affect that – the transfer coupling is just( before) the transmission, so the transmission itself doesn’t affect the each-wheel drive system, ” he said.

Toyota Australia restarted orders for the GR Yaris last November after a lengthy pause but for an allocation of just 160 vehicles over 12 months.
